General Objectives of the Course

  • Train participants in fundamental and advanced surgical techniques in oral surgery.
  • Provide the necessary knowledge and training for general dentists to perform precise and accurate procedures in periodontal surgery and soft tissue management.
  • Develop practical skills by directly applying knowledge on real patients.
  • Offer a comprehensive approach that covers low, medium, and high complexity procedures in a clinical-hospital environment.
  • Aimed at general dentists looking to improve their surgical techniques.


Course Methodology

The course is designed to maximize hands-on learning, with 90% of the time dedicated to surgery on patients. Activities will take place in three different areas where students will rotate to perform various types of surgical interventions.

Each day is divided into two parts:

  1. Theoretical Session (10%) – A 1-hour introductory class covering the theoretical principles that will guide the day’s clinical practice.
  2. Clinical Practice (90%) – Over the next 11 hours, students will actively participate in surgeries under the direct supervision of specialized maxillofacial surgeons.

  1. Impacted Third Molar Extraction Surgery

    • Diagnostic and planning techniques.
    • Indications and surgical techniques based on the degree of impaction.
    • Management of postoperative pain and complications.

  2. Treatment of Odontogenic Cysts and Tumors

    • Procedures for the resection of odontogenic cysts.
    • Differential diagnosis between benign and malignant lesions.
    • Post-excision reconstructive techniques.

  3. Management of Surgical Complications

    • Control of intraoperative bleeding.
    • Treatment of postoperative infections.
    • Strategies for reducing simple fractures.

  4. Biosafety Protocols

    • Sterilization norms and proper use of surgical equipment.
    • Proper handling of personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Disinfection procedures in the operating room.

    Topic: Introduction to Oral Surgery in a Hospital Setting

    Content:

    – Hospital norms and protocols for handling surgical patients.

    – Essential surgical equipment and tools.

    – Preoperative diagnosis and planning.

    Objective: To familiarize students with the theoretical foundations necessary to perform low-complexity procedures.

  • 09:00 AM - 08:00 PM: Clinical Practice on Patients (Low Complexity)

    Procedures:

    – Extraction of retained or supernumerary teeth.

    – Extraction of non-complex third molars.

    – Control and management of periapical infections.

    Setting: Room 1 – Low complexity procedures.

    Student Activities:

    – Patient diagnosis.

    – Surgical field preparation under supervision.

    – Participation in the stages of local anesthesia, incision, extraction, and suturing.

    – Immediate postoperative review.

Day 2: Wednesday, March 26 (Group 1) / Thursday, March 27 (Group 2)

    Topic: Medium and High Complexity Surgeries in Oral Surgery

    Content:

    – Advanced techniques for impacted molar extraction.

    – Surgical treatment of maxillary cysts and benign tumors.

    – Soft tissue management and intraoperative complications.

    Objective: To provide students with a deeper understanding of medium and high complexity procedures.

  • 09:00 AM - 08:00 PM: Clinical Practice on Patients (Medium and High Complexity)

    Procedures:

    – Extraction of complex (impacted) third molars.

    – Resection of odontogenic cysts.

    – Surgical management of simple maxillary fractures.

    Setting: Rooms 2 and 3 – Middle and high complexity procedures .

    Student Activities:

    – Direct participation in all phases of the surgical procedure.

    – Use of advanced suturing techniques.

    – Management of intraoperative complications under supervision.

Teaching Staff


Jorge Luis Gutierrez Valentin

Dental Surgeon with a specialization in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He graduated from Universidad Inca Garcilaso de la Vega in 2012 and obtained his specialization in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in 2022. He currently works as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at Multident Clinic and San José Clinic, where he performs advanced maxillofacial surgery procedures. He completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the National Hospital Cayetano Heredia and the Central Military Hospital (2015-2019), where he also conducted his thesis on zygomatic complex fractures. In 2019, he participated in an international rotation at Hospital Juárez in Mexico, specializing in maxillary bone pathology. 

Dr. Gutiérrez has complemented his training with a diploma in oral implantology and has participated in key conferences such as the "From Face to Airway" Virtual Congress on Orthognathic Surgery and the XVI Peruvian Congress of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has delivered lectures on topics such as orthognathic surgery planning and osteomyelitis of the maxillae. His expertise covers trauma management, advanced surgical planning, and the integration of innovative implantology techniques.

Eduardo Pacheco Roller

Dental Surgeon graduated from University Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (UIGV), with a specialization in Oral Implantology and a Master’s degree in Stomatology from the same university. In 2019, he completed a postgraduate program in "Digital Implant Planning and Guided Surgery" at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, USA. 

He has held academic roles as a professor and coordinator of the undergraduate course in Theoretical and Practical Implantology, and as postgraduate coordinator of the Oral Implantology Specialty for international students at the Faculty of Stomatology of UIGV, from 2016 to 2018. Dr. Pacheco has been a guest lecturer at  Santa María University in Arequipa and the National University of Trujillo through CEPICISA in the Periodontics specialty. He is currently the coordinator and professor of the Periodontics and Implants Specialty at Roosevelt University.

Dr. Pacheco is a Key Opinion Leader for Dentium Academy in Peru, and a member of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and the Peruvian Association of Oral Implantology (ASPIO). He has also been a speaker at numerous national and international conferences.

Marly Grisel Céspedes Herrera

Dental Surgeon with a specialization in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, with solid experience in both clinical and administrative roles, as well as teaching. She graduated from University Inca Garcilaso de la Vega in 2011 and completed her specialization in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at San Marcos National University in 2017. She also holds a Master's degree in Higher Education with a focus on University Teaching and Research. 

Dr. Céspedes worked in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department at Villa El Salvador Emergency Hospital for six years, and currently practices at Stella Maris Clinic. Her training includes a diploma in diagnostic and orthognathic surgery for surgeons and orthodontists, as well as international training, such as a clinical stay in Badajoz, Spain, under the supervision of Dr. Florencio Monje Gil, and courses on minimally invasive surgery and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) tissue regeneration.

Her interpersonal and leadership skills have enabled her to manage teams and projects effectively, contributing to health improvement and business development.

Hernán Christofer Molina Delgado

Maxillofacial Surgeon with over 8 years of experience, specializing in arthroscopic surgery of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), orthognathic surgery, and facial trauma. 

He graduated as a dentist from Santa María Catholic University in 2009 and specialized in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at San Marcos National University in 2016. He completed a fellowship in TMJ Arthroscopic Surgery at the Foundation for Study and Development on Implantology and Maxillofacial surgery in Badajoz, Spain (2015), and participated in seminars such as AOCMF: Complications in Orthognathic Surgery (2019) and 3D Planning and Treatment for Orthognathic Surgery (2016).

He currently works as the Head of the Clinical and Surgical Odontoestomatology Unit at the Villa El Salvador Emergency Hospital and, since June 2023, as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at the National Police Hospital of Peru. He is responsible for advanced procedures in trauma management and maxillofacial pathologies, and also participates in the training of maxillofacial surgery residents. 

Dr. Molina is committed to the implementation of minimally invasive treatments in public health and has extensive experience in clinical service management and teaching. 

Jimmy Ascanoa Olazo

Dr. Jimmy Ascanoa Olazo is a Dental Surgeon, graduated from Federico Villarreal National University, with a specialization in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (RNE 3661). He holds a Master’s degree in Teaching and Research in Stomatology and has completed doctoral studies in Education. Dr. Ascanoa is currently the coordinator of the Oral Surgery course at Norbert Wiener University in Lima, César Vallejo University in Piura, and Señor de Sipán University in Chiclayo. He has previously taught at San Marcos National University and in the Oral Surgery Diploma Program at the Professional Development School of the Peruvian Dental Association, where he also served as General Director. 

Dr. Ascanoa is an accomplished speaker, having presented at national and international conferences, and is the author of several articles on oral surgery published in Scopus-indexed journals. He is also a member of the editorial team of the journal Salud y Vida Sipanense at Señor de Sipán University, Chiclayo.

Litzandra Correa

Dr. Litzandra María Correa Rojas is a dentist specialized in oral and maxillofacial surgery, with a strong commitment and dedication to her profession. She graduated with a degree in Stomatology from Universidad Andina del Cusco and continued her training, specializing in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Daniel Alcides Carrión University through the CEPICISA Postgraduate School in Lima. 

She completed her residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Hospital María Auxiliadora between 2017 and 2021. Additionally, she received training in "Oral Implantology, PRF, and Maxillary Sinus Elevation" at Neotraining, Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2018.

Since 2018, she has been an active member of the Peruvian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, as well as various international organizations, including the Latin American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology (ALACIBU), the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS Foundation), and the AO CMF Foundation, which she joined in 2019.

Aurelio Medina Gonzales

Dr. Aurelio Medina Gonzales is a specialist in Periodontics and Oral Implantology, with a second specialization from San Juan Bautista University. He holds two Master’s degrees: one in Implantology and Oral Surgery and another in Periodontics and Mucogingival Surgery, both from Technological University of México. He has also completed a diploma in Occlusion. 

Dr. Medina currently serves as Academic Coordinator and teaches at the Peruvian Dental Association in Trujillo and Ayacucho. He is also a postgraduate professor at the Center for Postgraduate Studies and Research in Health Sciences (CEPICISA). He oversees the Periodontics, Implantology, and Rehabilitation Clinical Area at the Multident Clinics in Miraflores and San Miguel.

He is the founder of the Peruvian Academy of Ozonotherapy in Stomatology and has published scientific articles in the SAODS journal (USA). Additionally, he is a registered researcher in the National Registry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (Renacyt) and a renowned speaker at national and international conferences.
